UNICEF is the United Nations Childrens Fund. Set up in 1946, they were originally called the United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund.
UNICEF was originally designed to be a short term operation bringing relief to children in 13 European countries who had suffered from the impact of the Second World War.
In 1953, UNICEF became a permanent fixture in the United Nations system. They dropped two words from their title at this time but kept the well-known acronym.
UNICEF Australia is one of 38 National Committees around the world working to raise money for UNICEFs work.
