'THE ODDFELLOWS HALL' - KIM NELSON FINE ART & EDITIONS STUDIO

In November 2010 Kim Nelson embarked on a new project in his home town – a public studio. The studio is part working studio, part gallery, part performance venue. It is the primary outlet for Kim Nelson Limited Editions and is open several days of the week for visitor's to browse, shop and view works in progress.

"I want it to be a place where folk can feel comfortable and take time out from their busy lives and just relax with the art" says the artist.

Visitors to the studio may sometimes be able to see the artist at work and witness artworks in progress as they are prepared for solo exhibitions. Limited editions, artcards, books and orginal artwork are also available for purchase.
From time to time performances and activities also occur such as the studio's inaugural opening concert by internationally renowned harpist Alice Giles and traditional Indian dancer Padma Menon who performed 'Sangam',
a production they co-created.

History of the Building
Kim Nelson Fine Art & Editions is located in an historic 'Oddfellows' Hall' and is a classic part of Yass Valley history located on the main street of Yass. It was built in 1887 by the Royal Order of Oddfellows, more commonly known in Australia as Manchester Unity, a group which originated in Britain in the late 18th century. They are a benevolent and social society, sometimes classified as a friendly benefit society having initiatory rites and ceremonies, gradation or degrees in membership, and mystic signs of recognition and communication.

The title 'Oddfellows' was attached to them early in their history, the reasons for this being lost in the mists of time but probably related to the medieval guild system of odd trades and main trades.

Whatever the reasons, the artist feels the title totally appropriate!  Take a virtual visit of Oddfellows by clicking below:
